The McLaren P1 is a limited-production plug-in hybrid, mid-engine sports car produced by British carmaker McLaren Automotive. Specifications-wise, the McLaren P1 runs on a twin-turbocharged, twin-supercharged V8 engine, which is a staple of the carmaker's lineup from Woking, England.

The McLaren P1 is designed to deliver braking performance and capabilities similar to GT3 or Le Man's sports race cars. Just like the 1992 McLaren F1 road car, the McLaren P1 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive design using a safety cage concept with a carbon-fiber monocoque and roof structure called MonoCage, a development of MonoCell used on the current-generation MP4-12C and the MP4-12C Spider, both launched early 2012. The P1 is built around the exterior styling of the F1 but refines the car's overall aerodynamics.

The 2013-launched P1 was retroactively added to the McLarenUltimate series in 2015, with the McLaren Automotive branding strategy being divided between the Ultimate, Super, and Sports Series models, underscoring the rapidly expanding line-up. In 2015, McLaren decided to push the P1 further, introducing the limited-edition GTR version of the car. The cost new was still insufficient for some, so British company Lanzante -- who had run the original McLaren Formula One car -- got involved, offering a conversion package that turned the track-only P1 GTR into a road-going vehicle.

Encouraged by Lanzante's efforts, British automotive manufacturer McLaren authorized five new cars (plus one prototype) built to a similar specification as the converted GTR, and Lanzante built those cars.
Hand-built by a team of selected 61 engineers, with production rates at one car a day, British automotive manufacturer McLaren expected to produce 50 P1s by the end of 2013. Production of the P1 launched in 2013 ended in December 2015, having produced 375 units since the first vehicle left McLaren Automotive doors in October 2013.

It was one of McLarens first contemporary hybrid systems, and as such, McLaren went to great lengths during testing to ensure the P1 was capable of competing against the latest sports cars from Ferrari and Porsche. McLaren went the whole hog into the hypercar segment with the P1, and that instantly earned it the title of the most unhealthy vehicle to have been built since the original P1.
