The Ford Mustang has had a rich history, beginning with its debut in April 1964 as a sporty, affordable vehicle based on the Ford Falcon subcompact. It quickly became a hit, selling over 400,000 cars in its first year and leaving other automakers scrambling to compete. The first Mustangs were referred to as 1964.5 models, but all first-year Mustangs were technically 1965.The Mustang was designed to be a high-performance car that was still affordable, and Ford has tried to keep prices low throughout its history. From 1964 to 2004, the Mustang shared a chassis with other Ford lineups, remaining rear-wheel drive throughout production.
Over the years, the Mustang has had a variety of engines, ranging from a naturally aspirated four-cylinder to a turbocharged engine in 1979 to a low-profile LX 5.0 that combined a V-8 engine with an LX-like appearance. The 1965 Mustang ushered in a new vehicle type called the pony car, and Ford has continued to innovate and evolve the Mustang over the years.
The mid-to-late 1970s Mustang had complex emissions systems that made tuning engines difficult, but even these models have their fans. In 1965, Ford commissioned Holman & Moody to prepare a 10,427 cubic inch Mustang V8 for the NHRA Factory/Experimental class. And the new Shelby Mustang GT500, with a supercharged V8 producing 480 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, has been dubbed the most excellent Mustang ever built.
