Paganism is a general term first given by early Christians in the fourth century AD to people in the Roman Empire who practice polytheism or ethnic religions other than the then-popular Judaism. During the Roman empire, people were called pagan, either because they were in the minority relative to the Christian population or because they were not believers of Jesus. Alternative terms to the pagan term were used as Hellenic, non-Jewish, or heretic. Pagan religion was originally considered the religion of the peasantry, that is, the religion of poor people or marginalized peoples.
