Once upon a time during Dzun-Nun al-Mishri around the ninth century of Hijriyah, there was a young man who always looked down on Sufis and often shouted against them. Dzun-Nun had often heard about the young man's behavior but she was just indifferent to the young man's insults. One time, the young man met face to face with Dzun-Nun. He looked at Dzun-Nun with one eye and full of contempt.

Seeing this humiliation, Dzun-Nun immediately removed the ring that was wrapped around her finger and gave it to the young man. "You take my ring to the public market and mortgage it for only one gold dinar to the people there," ordered Dzun-Nun.

For some reason, Dzun-Nun's authority made the young man obedient to carry out his orders. The young man went to the public market offering the crowd in the market to take over temporarily (mortgage) for only one gold dinar. But no one would buy it for more than a dirham of silver. Because no one wanted to buy it for one dinar, the young man returned and handed the ring to Dzun-Nun.

However, Dzun-Nun ordered the young man to go back, "Now you take my ring to the jewelry shops who really know the value of a piece of jewelry. Ask them how much they dare to appreciate it.”

This young man went again to the jewelry shops which were also around the market. After arriving there, he offered the Dzun-Nun's ring. To his surprise, almost all of the jewelry shop owners agreed to value Dzun-Nun's ring at a price of one thousand gold dinars.

The young man was possessed by feelings of shock and confusion at the contradictory events that had just happened to him. He was surprised because why the jewelers who owned the jewelry shop dared to appreciate the ring at exorbitant prices. Meanwhile, he was confused as to why no one among the people in the public market wanted to buy it, even if it was only for one dinar.

When he arrived before the great Sufi, his surprise and confusion immediately faded after hearing Dzun-Nun's answer. "Now you have truly experienced the quality of the Sufis," said Dzun-Nun. "So far, you only know the Sufis as most visitors to the public market know this ring. No more."

Jolted to his senses by the performance performed skillfully by Dzun-Nun, this young man immediately knelt before Dzun-Nun and apologized for his mistakes so far. Since then, he has never underestimated the Sufis.
