This translation was made from the languages in which the biblical texts were originally written (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek). The NVI was produced with the following fundamental objectives:Clarity - the text has been translated so that it can be read by the general population without major difficulties, but without being too informal. Archaisms, for example, were banished, and regionalisms were avoided.
Fidelity - the translation must be faithful to the meaning intended by the original authors.
Beauty of style - the result should allow a pleasant reading, and a good sound when spoken in public.
The translation project for the Portuguese language began in 1990, under the coordination of the linguist and hebraist, Rev. Luiz Sayão. A New Testament version was first published in 1991.
The definitive and complete translation in Portuguese was published in 2000, from the original languages, based on the same tradutológica philosophy of the New International Version (NIV).
The NIV has a Protestant profile, and seeks not to favor any particular denomination. It is theologically balanced and seeks to use the language of the current Portuguese. The NVI translation process was attended by renowned Protestant scholars such as Russell Shedd, Estevan Kirschner, Luiz Sayão, Carlos Osvaldo Pinto and Randall Cook (Israel's archaeologist).
The translation method of the New International Version is similar to that of the New International Version, which is a level of translation between formal equivalence and dynamics: when the text can be translated more literally, formal equivalence is used . However, if the literally translated text is difficult for an ordinary reader to understand, then a more functional translation is made, seeking to bring the meaning intended in the original to a natural and understandable Portuguese. For this reason, in general the NIV is more "dynamic" than Almeida's translations, but more "literal" than the New Translation in Today's Language.
Despite the similarities between the New International Version and the New International Version, the Brazilian version is not a translation of the English language, but of the original languages.
