The Aljafería Palace is a thousand-year-old building that is fundamental to learning about the history of Aragón. It has been the residence of the Muslim kings of the Taifa of Saraqusta, of the Christian kings of the kingdom and the Crown of Aragon, of the Catholic Monarchs; but it has also been the headquarters of the Inquisition and a barracks. The Aljafería is, among other things, the northernmost historic Muslim palace in the world. Its artistic complexity means, for example, finding one of the highest and most beautiful levels of Hispano-Muslim art. But his artistic legacy does not end there, UNESCO declared the Mudejar art of Aragon a World Heritage Site in 2001, highlighting that the Aljafería Palace is one of the most representative monuments of this style, which has become the symbol of the Aragonese civil architecture and, probably, in one of the obligatory references of Spanish history and culture.

Our visitors, when they access the monument, not only find the beautiful arches of the Islamic palace, which contrast with the imposing presence of the Troubadour tower, the oldest building in the palace, so called since it was the setting for the romantic drama that Antonio García Gutiérrez wrote, entitled “El trovador”, about which years later Giuseppe Verdi developed a part of the opera Il Trovatore; But tourists also visit the medieval palace of the Kings of Aragon, with the alfarjes that cover its rooms, or the impressive Throne Room, commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs, with the spectacular gilt and polychrome wooden ceiling.

The Aljafería has experienced various ups and downs, changes and stages. Many Aragonese still remember its status as a barracks in the 20th century. But once the restoration work on the monument was completed in 1998, it is once again a living and open building, a cultural benchmark, which shows its long history and houses within its walls the institution that represents all Aragonese in its parliament, the Cortes de Aragon.
