Ramayana (English: Ramayana) is a unique Sanskrit epic written by Valmiki, which has a very important place in Hindu religion. Its 24,000 verses are a part of Hindu memory, through which the story of King Ram of Raghuvansh was told. It is also called 'Valmiki Ramayana' or 'Balmiki Ramayana'. There are seven chapters of Ramayana, which are known as Kanda.

According to Tulsidas ji, a religious writer of Sanatan Dharma, the story of Shri Ram was first narrated by Lord Shankar to Mother Parvati. Where Lord Shankar was narrating the story of Lord Shri Ram to Parvati, there was a crow's nest and the crow sitting inside it was also listening to that story. Even before the story was completed, Mother Parvati fell asleep, but the bird heard the entire story. The same bird was reborn as Kakabhushundi. Kakabhushundi narrated this story to Garuda. This sacred story of Shri Ram that came from the mouth of Lord Shankar is famous by the name of 'Adhyatma Ramayana'. 'Adhyatma Ramayana' is considered to be the world's first Ramayana. Due to a change of heart, after becoming a sage from a bandit and attaining enlightenment, Valmiki re-compounded this story of Lord Shri Ram in verse. The story of Lord Shri Ram written in verse by Maharishi Valmiki is known as 'Valmiki Ramayana'. Valmiki is called Adikavi and Valmiki Ramayana is also known as 'Adi Ramayana'.

There are seven chapters of Ramayana which are known as Kanda.

1. Child Incident
2. Ayodhya incident
3. Aranya Kand
4. Kishkindhakand
5. Sunderkand
6. War incident (Lanka incident)
7. Uttarakhand

Ramcharitmanas (English: Ramcharitmanas) is the most important work of Tulsidas. Its composition started in Ayodhya on Ram Navami of Samvat 1631 AD, but some part of it was also composed in Kashi (Varanasi), it originates from a soratha that comes at the beginning of Kishkindha Kand, in which there is mention of Kashi Sevan.

'Ramcharitmanas' is a biographical poem, in which the entire life of Ram has been described. The qualities of both 'character' and 'poetry' are found equally in it. The protagonist of this poem is also the poet's idol, hence along with being 'character' and 'poetry', he is also a symbol of the poet's devotion.
