সারাদেশে জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আওতায় সরকারি ও বেসরকারি কলেজের সংখ্যা ২ হাজার ২৫০টি। যার মধ্যে ৮৫৭ টি কলেজে স্নাতক (সম্মান) পড়ানো হয়, যার মোট আসন সংখ্যা ৪ লক্ষ ২০ হাজারের অধিক। স্নাতকোত্তর পড়ানো হয় ১৪৫ টি কলেজে।
ঢাকা, চট্টগ্রাম ও রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধিভুক্ত কলেজের তদারকি করতে গিয়ে অভ্যন্তরীণ শিক্ষাকার্যক্রম পরিচালনায় বাড়তি চাপে ছিল। সেই চাপ কমাতে ও অধিভূক্ত কলেজগুলোর মান উন্নয়নে লক্ষ্যে ১৯৯২ সালের ২১শে অক্টোবর জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়।
